Curaçao is a small Caribbean island that became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in October 2010 in a change of constitutional status which dissolved the Netherlands Antilles.
The legal system is based on Dutch Civil Law. The national currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder (NAf.) to be replaced by Caribbean guilder in January 2012, and the country’s official language is Dutch, whilst Papiamento, a Spanish-Portuguese-Dutch-English dialect and English are widely spoken.
