The Republic of Malta is an archipelago consisting of three main islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino) and is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea between southern Europe and North Africa. The island became independent in 1964 after 164 years as a British Colony, with a legal system based on Code Napoleon whilst the English Law plays a major role within the commercial law. The national currency is the Maltese Lira. The island’s official languages are Maltese and English.
